Autonomy for Smart Manufacturing
Hong-Seok Park, Ngoc-Hien Tran
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):287-295.
Published online April 1, 2014
Smart manufacturing (SM) considered as a new trend of modern manufacturing helps to meet objectives associated with the productivity, quality, cost and competiveness. It is characterized by decentralized, distributed, networked compositions of autonomous systems. The model of SM is inherited from the organization of the living systems in biology and nature such as ant colony, school of fish, bee’s foraging behaviors, and so on. In which, the resources of the manufacturing system are considered as biological organisms, which are autonomous entities so that the manufacturing system has the advanced characteristics inspired from biology such as selfadaptation, self-diagnosis, and self-healing. To prove this concept, a cloud machining system is considered as research object in which internet of things and cloud computing are used to integrate, organize and allocate the machining resources. Artificial life tools are used for cooperation among autonomous elements in the cloud machining system.

The biggest factors, which lower the machining accuracy of machine, are thermal deformation and chatter vibration. In this article, we introduce the development case of a device and technology that can automatically compensate thermal deformation errors of machine during long-time processing on the machine tool’s CNC (Computerized Numerical Controller) in real time. In machine processing, the data acquisition of temperature signal in real time and autocompensation of the machine origin of machine tools depending on thermal deformation have significant influence on improving the machining accuracy and the rate of operation. Thus, we attempts to introduce the related contents of the development we have made in this article : The development of a device that embedded the acquisition part of temperature data, linear regression to get compensation value, compensation model of neural network and a system that compensates the machine origin of machine tool automatically during manufacturing process on the CNC.

Hyunjei Jo, Chul Kim, Yongju Cho
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):311-317.
Published online April 1, 2014
As products have been more complex and customer’s demands of personalized products are increasing, manufacturing system has been changed from mass production to mass customization production that makes small quantity but different kinds of product. In addition, it becomes important that manufacturers quickly respond to variable customer’s demands and characteristic regulations in each country. Therefore, three prerequisites are essential for manufacturers to response agilely. First, manufacturing data should be monitored in real time, second, information is extracted from the data, and finally, the information is used to make manufacturing strategy. In this paper, the mobile dashboard system is presented. It visualizes manufacturing data on mobile devices, and measures performance of the shop floor through the information. The proposed system is composed of server and client, and is running on the R - the open source software for statistics. Four kinds of template are given for easy visualization through the system.

Accurate Calibration of Odometry Errors for Wheeled Mobile Robots by using Experimental Orientation Errors
Changbae Jung, Daun Jung, Woojin Chung
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):319-326.
Published online April 1, 2014
Accurate estimation of the robot’s position has an important role in autonomous navigation. Odometry is one of the most widely used techniques for mobile robot positioning. However, odometry has a well-known drawback that the position errors are accumulated when the travel distance increases. The UMBmark method is the conventional odometry calibration scheme for two wheel differential mobile robots. In the UMBmark method, the approximations for small angles are used in order to simplify the calculations. In this paper, we propose the new calibration scheme by using experimental orientation errors. Kinematic parameters can be calculated accurately without approximations by using experimental orientation errors. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the odometry accuracy can be improved by the proposed method.

Fault Detection and Localization using Wavelet Transform and Cross-correlation of Audio Signal
Hyo Geun Ji, Jung Hyun Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):327-334.
Published online April 1, 2014
This paper presents a method of fault detection and fault localization from acoustic noise measurements. In order to detect the presence of noise sources wavelet transform is applied to acoustic signal. In addition, a cross correlation based method is proposed to calculate the exact location of the noise allowing the user to quickly diagnose and resolve the source of the noise. The fault detection system is implemented using two microphones and a computer system. Experimental results show that the system can detect faults due to artifacts accidentally inserted during the manufacturing process and estimate the location of the fault with approximately 1 cm precision.

Tae Kyeong Hong, Gab Soon Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):335-342.
Published online April 1, 2014
This paper describes the forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass using the glass molding system with force applying system. The force applying system is composed of a body, a motor and gear, a rectilinear movement structure, a force sensor, a LVDT sensor (Linear Variable Differential Transformer), a up and down moving block, and so on. The glass molding system for characteristic test to find the forming conditions consists of the force applying system and a chamber, a metallic mold, a upper heater, a lower heater and so on. The characteristic test for forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass was carried out at forming temperature 620℃ and 650℃ using the glass molding system. As a result of the characteristic test, the forming conditions of curved glass could be found, and it is thought that the conditions can be used to apply to the system for producing in large quantities.

Performance Evaluation of a Washing Machine of Unconstrained Transmission
Yeong Man Kim, Woo Chun Choi
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):343-351.
Published online April 1, 2014
Washing machines designed to clean laundry have been more widely used at home as they reduce household labor and boost the quality of life. Technological advances and better standards of life increase demand for laundry washing performance. Energy efficiency regulations and consumer demand for the larger trend, washing machine makers should be done in performance studies to reduce power, and water consumption and the load on power transmission devices. In this study, performance of a fully automatic washing machine with unconstrained transmission is analyzed through experiment and CFD simulation. It is found that the interaction between laundry and transmission change the washing behavior and affect washing performance with regard to the degree of freedom. The results obtained in this study can be used in developing new washing machine transmissions and make them more robust.

Surface Modification Method of Stainless Steel using Electrochemical Etching
Chan Lee, Joonwon Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):353-358.
Published online April 1, 2014
This paper reports a simple, yet effective 1-step surface modification method for stainless steel. Electrochemical etching in dilute Aqua Regia forms hierarchical micro and nanoscale structure on the surface. The surface becomes highly hydrophobic (~150°) as a result of the etching in terms of static contact angle (CA). However the liquid drops easily pinned on the surface because of high contact angle hysteresis (CAH), which is called a “petal effect”. The petal effect occur because of gap between surface microstructures, despite of intrinsic hydrophobicity of the base material. The pore size and period of surface structure can be controlled by applied voltage during the etching. This method can be applied to wide variety of industrial demand for surface modification, while maintaining the advantageous anti-corrosion property of stainless steel.

근골격계 통증질환의 진단과 치료를 위한 주사바늘형 복합온도 프로브의 개발
Sung-Ki Nam, Hyung-Il Kim, Chang-Ho Byun, Sun-Kyu Lee
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(4):359-364.
Published online April 1, 2014
This paper describes the development of needle type probe that measures temperature and injects medicine for both diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain syndrome (MPS). The size of trigger points is from several micrometers to millimeter. Therefore, it is required to develop a medical device that is capable of not only finding the trigger points by temperature measurement, but also injecting medicine at the exact location for treatment. To challenge these difficulties, thermocouple was fabricated on the surface of a needle using metal deposition process. Special type of stainless-constantan thermocouple was achieved from the stainless body of a needle itself and deposited constantan metal film. In particular, parylene coating enables to limit the temperature sensitive area to the end of the needle tip. Fabricated needle type probe produces 3.25 mV/℃ of thermoelectric sensitivity and compared its performance with commercial T-type thermocouple in animal muscle sample.
