J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):367-373.
Published online May 1, 2014
Surface texturing is a machining process on the surface to give engineering functions. The representative process of the surface texturing is lotus effect to give hydrophobic property by the lithography and chemical etching, which is the bio mimic from the nature. Surface texturing can be manufactured by a lot of processes, in particular using mechanical method such as a precise diamond turning, grinding, rolling, embossing, vibrorolling, and abrasive jet machining (AJM). Among them, the grinding process is notable in terms of the wide range of texturing area and fast processing time. The patterning by grinding is done by the grooved grinding wheel on the work piece. In this case, the pattern shape is determined by the grinding conditions as well as the wheel dressing conditions. In this paper, experimental study on the pattern shapes were done and provide the feasibility in use for the large area patterning.

Seung-Kook Ro, Gyungho Khim, Jong-Kweon Park
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):381-387.
Published online May 1, 2014
This paper introduces a system to machine micro-sized patterns effectively on surface based on micro-milling process using tools with simultaneous rotation and oscillation, oscillation micro milling. To review the effectiveness of proposed concept, we integrated a micro-spindle supported by active magnetic bearings with a precision 3-axis air bearing stage using double-wedge mechanism, and tested this oscillation milling. Two types of oscillation milling were tested, which are linear oscillation milling with a flat end mill and elliptical oscillation milling with a ball end mill with 0.3 mm of diameter. The spindle was rotating 110 krpm and workpiece was moving constant speed of 2~8 mm/sec during the oscillation milling. As the results, multiple oval shape dimples were generated in regular spacing, and the variation of elliptical motion made different shapes of patterns. The results showed that proposed oscillation milling can be successfully used for machining repeated micro-patterns.

J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):389-394.
Published online May 1, 2014
In this paper, we report a new manufacturing method for friction reduction using micro-AAJ (abrasive air-jet) machining. AAJ machining employs compressed air to accelerate a jet of highspeed particles to mechanically machine features, including micro-channels and micro-holes, into glass, metal, or polymer substrates for use in microfluidics, MEMS (micro electromechanical systems). And we introduce the micro-AAJ machining system, which consists of a micro-AAJ nozzle and a five-axis positioning system. Various micro-AAJ nozzles can be used, depending on the required surface structure, and three-dimensional machining is possible. We machined samples under six different conditions and describe machining results obtained while using it. We also measured the coefficient of friction of micro-textured surfaces. We report the coefficient of friction of micro-textured surfaces patterned using micro-AAJ machining for engine piston ring.

Chul Yong Cho, Shi Hyoung Ryu
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):395-401.
Published online May 1, 2014
Development of five axis tool grinding machine and CAD/CAM systems increase tool design flexibility. In this research, investigated are cutting characteristics of ball-end mill with different helix angle. Special WC ball-end mills with 0o, 10o, 20o, 30o helix angles are designed and used in various cutting tests. Machining performance according to helix angle variation is evaluated from cutting forces, surface roughness, tool wear, produced chip shape, and vibration characteristics. The ball-end mill with 10o helix angle shows the best cutting performance due to appropriate chip load distribution and smooth chip flow. This research can be used for cutting edge geometry optimization and novel design of ball-end mill.

Ho Sang Kim, Dong-Chan Lee, Kyoung-Don Lee, Young-Soo Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):403-409.
Published online May 1, 2014
For ground-based telescope application, the performance assessment of tip-tilt actuator is important because the optical quality of telescope depends upon the windshake compensation ability of the fast steering secondary mirror. But it is difficult to measure the performance characteristics of the actuators due to the large size mirror and test facilities including the vacuum support and structural frame. In this paper, the full-scale tip-tilt test bed for the large size secondary mirror with diameter of 1m is built and the several tests are performed including the range, resolution and frequency response function. From the measurement results, it is shown that the tip-tilt actuator can successfully compensate the windshake with frequency of maximum 12 Hz and be a candidate for the Giant Magellan Telescope.

Design Optimization of the Support Frame of an Antenna Positioner Mounted on a Vehicle
Taeho Jang, Youngshik Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):411-416.
Published online May 1, 2014
In this research we present design optimization methods for a vehicle-mounted satellite antenna positioner. Our initial antenna positioner was conservatively designed to satisfy a worst case scenario where wind blew across the positioner at the speed of 120 km/h. Investigating stresses and safety based on Finite Element Methods (FEM), we find reflector support frames can be optimized to significantly reduce the weight of the positioner system. Thus, we optimize the reflector support frame from the given initial design while considering weight, maximum stress, maximum allowable deflection, cross section, and thickness. As a result, Shape C and the thickness of 2 mm are determined for the cross section of the reflector support frame. Applying this result, the weight of the new antenna positioner is 57.343 kg, which is decreased by 10.74% compared to the initial conservative design.

Development of Optical Pickup for ElectroAcoustic Guitar
Bong-Hi Shin, Young-Woo Park
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):417-422.
Published online May 1, 2014
A guitar pickup is a transducer that converts string vibration to an electrical signal. The magnetic and piezo pickups are the most commonly used for the respective electric and electroacoustic guitars. The magnetic pickups are prone to magnetic interference between the steel strings and permanent magnets, while the piezo ones are not free from signal inference between the strings. Thus, this paper presents the development of an optical pickup for the electroacoustic guitar. The proposed optical pickup has the top-to-bottom structure. It uses two of Infrared (IR) Light Emitting Diode (LED) and one photodetector. The developed optical pickup is subjected to the evaluation with commonly used piezoelectric pickup. It becomes obvious that SNR with the optical pickup is increased by 45 percent in average, compared with the piezoelectric pickup. It can be concluded that the developed optical pickup has a potential to be applied to the acoustic guitar.

Jae-Chang Lee, Kwang-Il Lee, Seung-Han Yang
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):423-430.
Published online May 1, 2014
In this study, the five-DOF motion at ultra-precision linear stage under static and dynamic conditions are evaluated through the extending application of ISO 230-2. As the performance factors, the bi-directional accuracy and repeatability of the five-DOF motion are quantitatively evaluated with the measurement uncertainties which are determined using the standard uncertainty of equipment used in experiment. The motion under static condition are analyzed using geometric errors. The five geometric errors except the linear displacement error are measured using optimal measurement system which is designed to enhance the standard uncertainty of geometric errors. In addition, the motion under dynamic conditions are analyzed with respect to the conditions with different feed rate of the stage. The experimental results shows that the feed rate of stage has a significant effect on straightness motions.

J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):431-439.
Published online May 1, 2014
Recently, a demand for precision 5-axis machine tools is significantly increasing, and the maintenance of machine tool accuracy becomes more important. it is very difficult to evaluate to accuracy of 5-axis M/C in the production site since it needs expensive measuring equipment and skilled engineer. On the other hand, evaluation items of 5-axis M/C are not systematically organized in the existing KS and ISO standards. In this study, the evaluation items for 5-axis M/C were derived systematically and a test workpiece was developed to evaluate the machine tool accuracy more easily. The error sources of machine tool can be estimated by machining and measuring of the test workpiece. The correlation between the machine tool accuracy and the accuracy of machined test workpiece was analyzed. As a result, the accuracy of machined test workpiece represented the accuracy of machine tool and the error sources very effectively.

Taehyun Park
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):441-449.
Published online May 1, 2014
Thermoplastic fusion bonding is widely used to seal polymer microfluidic devices and optimal bonding protocol is required to obtain a successful bonding, strong bonding force without channel deformation. Besides, UV modification of the PMMA (poly-methyl methacrylate) is commonly used for chemical or biological application before the bonding process. However, study of thermal bonding for the UV modified PMMA was not reported yet. Unlike pristine PMMA, the optimal bonding parameters of the UV modified PMMA were 103˚C, 71 kPa, and 35 minutes. A very low aspect ratio micro channel (AR=1:100, 20 μm depth and 2000 μm width) was successfully bonded (over 95%, n>100). Moreover, thermal bonding of multi stack PMMA chips was successfully demonstrated in this study. The results may applicable to fabricate a complex 3 dimensional microchannel networks.

Shin Sung Yoo, Yoon-Young Heo, Dae-Eun Kim
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):451-457.
Published online May 1, 2014
Surface roughness of mechanical components is an important factor which affects the tribological phenomena. Various surface patterns have been applied to surfaces to improve the tribological characteristics of mechanical components. In this work, the friction reduction effect of micropatterns on silicon was investigated. For this purpose, micro-dimple patterns were fabricated on silicon wafer by DRIE process. In the friction experiments silicone oil was used as lubricant. Also, the lubricant was cleaned to simulate a lubricant depleted condition. In depleted lubricated condition, friction coefficient of micro-pattern specimens was lower than specimens without micro-patterns. It was found that friction reduction effect of micro-pattern could be successfully maintained even after cleaning the lubricant on the surface.

Development of a Cardiovascular Index That Estimates Cardiovascular Health Degree by Survey and Noninvasive Examination
Chong Sun Lee, In Wook Chung
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2014;31(5):459-466.
Published online May 1, 2014
An index was developed that estimates cardiovascular health degree with easily available physiological information such as survey and noninvasive measurement. The survey score was calculated by utilizing questions related to personal disease history, self-feeling, and management state. The measurement score was calculated using physiological parameters such as blood pressure, accelerated plethysmograph(APG), and heart rate variability(HRV), and augmentation index(AI). In order to evaluate effectiveness of the cardiovascular index and modify weighting factors used in each item, a clinical trial was done in a general hospital. The cardiovascular index showed a clear correlation of 0.685 with the doctor"s score on the cardiovascular health degree. The correlation between the self-estimated score and doctor’s score was as low as 0.217. The large gap between these two scores demonstrated necessity of more objective tools like the cardiovascular index. The cardiovascular score showed a significant difference between normal persons and patients suffering hypertension or diabetes. (p=0.000).
