With the progress of flexible devices, numerous researchers aim to manufacture the flexible battery with freefrom at various scales. Laser cutting is considered as one of the essential processes to achieve on-demand manufacturing but continuous wave or long-pulse laser beam may cause large heat affect zone (HAZ) in cutting edge and may even result in failure of battery function. Herein, it was demonstrated that the sophisticated cutting process using ultra-short pulse laser is applicable for tailoring of flexible battery with multilayered structure. Based on the comparison of cutting results using nanosecond laser and femtosecond laser, we confirmed that laser cutting by femtosecond laser induces much less thermal damage on thin foil electrodes, separator, and electrolyte. Furthermore, we investigated the interaction of femtosecond laser with the materials composed of a flexible battery and implemented a process for cutting each material without causing any critical damage. To prevent a short circuit between the anode and cathode, which usually occurs during laser cutting of the actual battery, the double-side cutting process was done by adjusting the focal points of the laser beam. We assume that the proposed approach can be applied in a roll-to-roll based cutting process for the mass-production of flexible devices.

Laser Assisted Additive Manufacturing by Rotating Metal Wire Feeder
Jaegu Kim, Chang-Woo Lee
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2018;35(9):847-852.

Chiefly, the metal wire-feed and laser additive manufacturing (AM) is a deposition process to produce larger mechanical parts required for aerospace, shipbuilding, automobile, and mold repair industries. The principal advantage of metal wire-feed AM is the high deposition rate compared to an assisted metal powder-feed AM, and metal powder-based fusion AM. During the wire-feed deposition process, the feed orientation is a critical parameter managed at all stages of processing. A better surface finish is attained when the melted wire flows smoothly through the process, and a wire feed direction that is utilized opposite to the deposition direction yields the best results. To improve the surface quality of metal 3D printing, we designed a rotating wire feeder, the feed direction of which varies with the direction of deposition; all free-form lines which thus exhibit identical surface qualities. Here, we use a rotating stage to orient the wire-feed direction according to the bead direction, a slip ring to supply electrical power to the feeder motor, and utilized two rotating channels on a plate to supply Ar gas and extract fumes safely during the processing stage. We evaluated the rotating wire feeder by building various parts as needed to the equipment.

Self-Assembled Monolayers(SAMs) by alkanethiol adsorption to thin metal film are widely being investigated for applications as coating layer for anti-stiction or friction reduction and in fabrication of micro structure of molecule and bio molecule. Recently, there have been many researches on micro patterning using the advantages of very thin thickness and etching resistance of Self-Assembled Monolayers in selective etching of thin metal film. In this report, we present the several machining method to form the nanoscale structure by Mask-Less laser patterning using alknanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers such as thin metal film etching and heterogeneous SAMs structure formation.
