Practical Blended Flow Models for Bulk Metal Forming Using the Cylindrical Tensile Test with Its Related Flow Behavior at Large Strain

The fundamental flow models of metallic materials at room temperature, including the Ludwik, Hollomon, Swift and Voce models, were evaluated in terms of tensile test with an emphasis on the necking phenomena and post-necking behavior, to emphasize their limitation in satisfying tensile strength and Considère condition as well as the pre-necking and post-necking strain hardening. To resolve this limitation and enhance the applicability of the new proposed flow model to typical strain hardening materials, the Ludwik-Swift blended flow model is proposed after investigation into three blended flow models among the Ludwik, Voce and Swift models. Results revealed that there is no interpolation-based blended flow model of the fundamental flow models for the example flow curve exhibiting typical strain hardening but that the extrapolation-based combination of them can provide an engineering solution when the Ludwik and Swift models are blended. It was revealed that the reason for their good matching lies in the distinct difference in the strain hardening exponent, between the Ludwik and Swift models in the case of metallic materials with typical strain hardening.

Effect of Nitrogen Gas Pressure on the Property of TiN-Coated Layer of High Speed Steel by Arc Ion Plating
Hae Ji Kim, Man Soo Joun
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2008;25(7):124-130.
Published online June 1, 2008
The effect of nitrogen gas pressure in arc ion plating on surface properties of the TiN-coated high speed steel(SKH51) is presented in this paper. The surface roughness, micro-particle, micro-hardness, coated thickness, atomic distribution of TiN, and adhesion strength are measured for various nitrogen gas pressures. It has been shown that the nitrogen gas pressure has a considerable effect on the surface roughness, adhesion strength, atomic distribution of TiN, and surface deposition of TiN of the high speed steels but that it has little influence on the micro-hardness and coated thickness.

Static and Structural Analyses of the Link of a Double-Action Link-Type Hydraulic Die Set
Jae Gun Eom, Byoung Yoon Jun, Man Soo Joun
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2006;23(10):96-102.
Published online October 1, 2006
This paper presents the mechanics of the link of a double-action link-type hydraulic die set for the enclosed die forging. Operational principle of the die set in the enclosed die forging is introduced with emphasis on force transmission from the press and the hydraulic system to the material through links, die components and punches. The force exerted on the link is statically investigated and its structural analysis is carried out. The analyzed results are discussed to be used for design of the link system.

Adaptive Finite Element Analysis of an Enclosed Die Forging Process of a Bevel Gear and its Experimental Verification
Min Cheal Lee, Rae Hun Park, Byoung Yoon Jun, Man Soo Joun
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2006;23(4):37-43.
Published online April 1, 2006
In this paper, an approach to adaptive finite element analysis of three-dimensional forging processes is presented with emphasis on remeshing. In the approach, an optimal tetrahedral element generation technique is employed and the mesh density is specified by the combination of the weighted normalized effective strain and the normalized effective strain rate as well as the weighted normalized curvature. The approach is applied to computer simulation of an enclosed die forging process of a bevel gear and its results are compared with its related experiments. It has been shown that the analyzed results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Experimental Study on Effect of Furnace Temperature on TiN-Coating of High Speed Steel by Arc Ion Plating
Hae Ji Kim, Sang Wook Lee, Man Soo Joun
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2006;23(2):97-103.
Published online February 1, 2006
In this paper, effect of temperature in TiN-coating by arc ion plating on surface characteristics of a TiN coated high speed steel is investigated by experiments. Hardness, surface roughness, TiN-coating thickness and adsorption force are measured in order to evaluate the effects. For evaluation of the experimental data, one-way ANDVA method is used. It is concluded that the furnace temperature in the range 400℃~500℃ in AIP processing has a little influence on the TiN coating of the SKH51 steels.

Experimental Study on Effect of TiN - Coating on a Cold Forging in Surface Characteristics
Hae Ji Kim, Sang Wook Lee, Sang Myoung Kang, Byung Yun Joun, Man Soo Joun
J. Korean Soc. Precis. Eng. 2005;22(1):47-52.
Published online January 1, 2005
In this paper, the effect of TiN-coating on product quality such as dimensional accuracy and surface roughness is experimentally investigated. A punch of SKDll material in cold forging an automotive bearing shaft and its related process found in a cold forging company are selected as the test example. The effect of TiN-coating is revealed in a quantitative manner. It is to be noted that TiN-coating is effective in controlling the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness as well as in increasing tool life.
